Lyme Regis
Nicknamed 'The Pearl of Dorset', the historic and picturesque coastal town of Lyme Regis is situated at the heart of the Jurassic Coast. Whilst enjoying the delights of the seaside, the town is also in a commutable position: approximately 26 miles west of Dorchester and 32 miles east of Exeter; where a wealth of shops, bars and resaurants can be found to suit all tastes. Benefiting from breathtaking scenery, the area has been awarded World Heritage Site status, due to its famous geology and fossil finds. Lyme Regis has also gained notoriety from its depiction in the film version of John Fowles' 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' and Jane Austen's 'Persuasion'.
Lyme Regis is probably best known for it's 'Cobb', a historic harbour wall, providing a breakwater to protect the town from storms, as well as forming a delightful harbour. This facilitated the development of both a major port and a shipbuilding centre from the 13th century onwards. For more then 50 years the Cobb has also been the home of Lyme Regis' Marine Aquarium, well worth a visit to see the local fish and marine life of the Jurassic Coast.
Still a popular tourist destination, visitors return anually, enchanted by the unspoiled character and drawn to the various events and activities held in the town, including art and music festivals. A real sense of community exists here, with Lyme Regis believed to be the smallest town in the country to have its own thriving cinema and theatre.
