Make a statement in your home – tips & tricks from our interior designer

If like us, you’ve recently dug out the decorating overalls, armed yourself with an assortment of paintbrushes and become familiar with the smell of fresh paint, then you might be looking for that final statement piece to complete your refreshed home.

Our interior designer Richard Ornelas from Abode Interiors shares his hints and tips for creating the perfect statement to give your home a real wow factor!

Home lighting is becoming more dramatic and ornate with bigger designs and more elaborate detailing on the fittings, creating a bold personal statement.

This is exactly what we did in Cavanna Homes’ Lyme View show home in the village of Holcombe near Dawlish where we added a stunning drop light above the dining table which catches the eye when you walk into the room and complements the simple and sophisticated style of the furniture.

Lighting is also a feature in the show home at Cavanna @ Wolborough Hill in Newton Abbot which has an elaborate drop light made with large glass spheres, hanging above the dining table, adding a different dimension to the room whether the lights are switched on or off.

The industrial influence is currently very on-trend and aluminium shades with weighted cords can add real drama to a room.

Statement lighting doesn’t need to be expensive. High street shops such as Matalan, Habitat in Homebase, BHS online, Next and Debenhams have a superb selection of lights of all shapes and sizes that don’t come with hefty price tags.

In the past, artwork in large bold frames took centre stage on walls, however, as style and trends continue to evolve, art is becoming more subtle and often framed in glass or light wood. Bright, bold and patterned wallpaper has crept in to take the place of statement artwork.

Wallpaper can be seen as artwork in its own right, with many intricate details and fantastic colours that stay imprinted on your mind for days afterwards.

If you’ve fallen in love with some brilliant and bespoke wallpaper, then transform it into a feature wall in your home making it a real show-stopper. Tip: when choosing your feature wall, make sure it’s the first wall you see when you enter the room!

For inspiration, I’d suggest looking at Cole & Son and Arte – that’s a great place to start to get a feel for the different designs and finishes.

Remember to consider what else is in the room when adding statement wallpaper. If you go strong with your design choice, don’t put anything else bold in the room – keep it simple. Everything in the room should have a purpose.

You don’t have to go big and bold to make a statement. For a simpler effect, consider adding an oversized headboard in the bedroom. This worked really well in the Lyme View show home, adding a modern and discreet statement to complement the bold colours used for the curtains and bed throw.

Mirrors are another simple statement piece; toned down and finished in gold or copper and coming in interesting shapes and sizes including hexagonal and natural shapes like a pebble, opposed to the classic square or oblong.

Finished with a simple frame or a coloured tint such as a pink hue, light grey or a classic vintage effect, mirrors are a great way to finish off a room and add extra light!

So this week, get creative and start browsing some high-street shop websites to see what brilliant pieces you come across to create the perfect statement and finish to your home.
