On your doorstep… places to explore in Barnstaple

If there’s one thing we can guarantee about living at our beautiful Berryfields development in Roundswell on the edge of Barnstaple, it’s that you’ll never be short of things to see and do!

Close by you’ll find shops and supermarkets within walking distance, while Barnstaple itself is a few minutes away by bus or car. In this bustling town you’ll find an array of independent shops alongside well known High Street names, as well as a superb choice of places to eat and drink. Once a key port in the trade of wool and yarn, the area is steeped in history and still plays host to a busy Victorian-built Pannier Market and Butchers Row, where delicious local produce is available. When it comes to entertainment, there is also a cinema, theatre and bowling alley, depending on your mood.

For many people, if you say ‘North Devon’, the first thing that comes to mind is the area’s spectacular beaches – and you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding which one to head to! Near the top of your list and just 35 minutes away from Berryfields, must certainly be Woolacombe. This stunning golden sandy beach has just been ranked among the world’s top 25 beaches in this year’s TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice awards! It was described by one reviewer as ‘three miles of heaven’ and we have to agree! Not far from there and just 30 minutes from home is the laid back resort of Croyde, a surfer’s paradise and a great spot to head to for a relaxed day out. Saunton Sands (just a few minutes away) is another of our favourites, and lays claim to the fact that Robbie Williams filmed his Angels music video there.

A little closer to home and just 10 minutes from Roundswell is the peaceful Fremington Quay. Enjoying panoramic views of the Taw Estuary, it’s the perfect spot for a light lunch or ice cream on a summer’s day. The hugely popular Tarka Trail also passes through it, a 180 mile walking and cycling route which stretches across North Devon and to Exmoor beyond. From here, you can follow the trail back towards Barnstaple or head in the other direction to the pretty village of Instow. Boasting another beautiful sandy beach which welcomes dogs on some parts of it throughout the year, this charming place has some fantastic choices for dining or drinking, whatever the weather.

If walking or hiking is high on your list when it comes to leisure time then the South West Coast Path is not to be missed, with breath-taking views to be enjoyed at every turn. It follows part of the Tarka Trail so can be easily reached from home. Heading inland a little and just under half an hour away, Exmoor National Park is a veritable feast for those who like to explore. With its variety of landscapes, abundance of nature and 267 square miles to discover, you’ll never run out of new routes to find and follow.

The South West is home to some wonderful National Trust properties and just 25 minutes from Berryfields is the charming Arlington Court, an Estate once held by the Chichester family for more than 500 years. Take a stroll around its magnificent grounds before learning more about the family, with a tour of the main house and Carriage Museum.

Berryfields is located just off the A39 Atlantic Highway which connects the area to North Cornwall and all of the fantastic places to visit there.  Of course, you’ll probably never want to leave but should you need to travel, Berryfields is also well-placed for heading further afield. Catch a train from Barnstaple’s station and you’ll be in Exeter in just over an hour, which offers excellent connections to the North or South. If you’re travelling by air, Exeter International Airport is also just over an hour away by car, while the A361 North Devon Link Road leads to the M5.
